Get to know our people: Rafik Faltas

With more than three decades of experience in the pulp and paper industry, Rafik Faltas brings a rare combination of deep technical knowledge and hands-on operational experience to his role as General Manager of Research and Development (R&D) at Opal.

Each day begins with a quick but critical check of the lab. “Power failures and equipment issues aren’t uncommon in Scoresby,” Rafik explains. “If something’s off, it can halt progress for days. I make it a priority to stay ahead of those disruptions.”

Once the lab is running smoothly, Rafik turns his focus to Opal’s broader R&D portfolio—balancing long-term innovation projects with short-term troubleshooting and routine audits.

“We’re involved in everything from fibre research to testing packaging for extreme transit conditions,” he says. “That variety is what makes the role so rewarding.”

Rafik’s team supports both internal and external customers. Internally, they collaborate with Opal’s paper and packaging divisions to maintain product quality and ensure compliance.

Externally, they deliver specialist testing services to brand owners, packaging manufacturers and other partners—ranging from recyclability assessments to transport simulation testing.

That last capability is a clear point of difference. “Our lab is one of only three ISTA-certified facilities in Australia—alongside a university centre and the Defence Force,” Rafik notes.

“It positions Opal as a true leader in durability and sustainability testing across the Asia-Pacific region.”

Rafik’s career began at a paper mill in New South Wales, where he worked as a process engineer before moving into R&D. From there, he progressed through the ranks—first as a research engineer, then senior researcher, and now leading the function nationally.

What’s kept him motivated after more than 30 years? “Linking fundamental science to packaging solutions you can hold in your hand. That’s what makes R&D such a rewarding space to work in.”

“We work with everything from raw fibres to finished packaging,” Rafik adds. “One day we’re analysing individual fibre structures, the next we’re testing full-scale packaging solutions.”

Outside of work, Rafik is equally committed to his community. He has served as secretary of his local church for more than 16 years and is a passionate traveller, having visited more than 25 countries.

For Rafik, research isn’t just about data or devices—it’s about value. And under his leadership, Opal’s R&D team continues to push boundaries and deliver packaging that performs.
