Focusing on the future
The Latrobe Valley
Aquaculture project.
Opal and MainStream Aquaculture, which is a global
leader in barramundi aquaculture, are proposing
to develop the world’s largest indoor bio-secure
recirculating barramundi aquaculture facility in the
Latrobe Valley, Victoria.
Co-located at Opal Australian Paper’s Maryvale Mill,
the facility would combine world-leading aquaculture
technology provided by Mainstream Aquaculture with
advanced industrial-scale manufacturing delivered by
Opal.
Locating the Aquaculture facility adjacent to the
Maryvale Mill means complementary resources and
infrastructure can be leveraged, with direct access
to a wide range of services such as fresh water,
heating, effluent treatment, energy and transport
infrastructure.
The facility would grow and process more than 3,700
tonnes of premium barramundi to support strong
demand from domestic and international seafood
markets.
The $125 million aquaculture project would create a
new industry for the region, supporting high value,
skilled jobs. During construction, it would create 364
jobs and once operational, the facility would support
263 direct and flow-on jobs.
