Petuna sustainable packaging
In an Australian first for the salmon industry,
Opal in collaboration with Petuna, developed an
innovative, sustainable packaging alternative to
expanded polystyrene (EPS), for fish packaging
and transportation.
As EPS cannot be recycled, the majority ends up in
landfill. Opal’s solution, which contains more than
55% recycled paper, is a sustainable solution that
can be recycled.
The packaging was designed with moisture barrier
properties to withstand low temperatures for
fresh chilled products and is approved for airline
transportation for export, and suitable for domestic
controlled cold chain transportation.
By using Opal’s patented Photo Surefresh process
and functionally coated liners, we were able to
deliver a stunning photographic quality branded
packaging solution for Petuna.
Dan Picked
Opal, in partnership with Dan Murphy’s, has
designed and created an innovative and robust
Australian made, 100% recycled and recyclable
wine box for the Dan Picked wine delivery
subscription service.
The packaging, which is made with papers
produced by Opal Paper & Recycling’s Botany
Mill, needed to be robust enough for six bottles of
wine to withstand bulk interstate distribution and
delivery, and to also provide an exciting unboxing
experience for consumers, when their delivery
arrived.
The sustainable packaging provides a sense of
discovery upon opening each wine delivery and
integrates a QR code to provide tasting notes and
the characteristics of each handpicked wine, and
food pairing suggestions.

Opal’s food and fresh produce punnet
Opal has designed and developed a paper-based
food and fresh produce punnet, as an alternative to
standard plastic (PET) containers.
The punnets, which are lighter in weight than some
other forms of packaging, are still durable enough
to protect fresh produce across the supply chain.
A standout innovative feature of the punnets is
an acetate film produced from wood pulp. The
transparent film enables re-sealing for food safety,
food waste management and product visibility.
The punnet is locally made in Australia, using paper
from Opal’s Maryvale and Botany Mills and
is recyclable.
