Opal launches 2024 Sustainability Report

Opal has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, reaffirming our vision Opal shapes the future through sustainable packaging. As an innovative, solutions-led business based in Australia and New Zealand, sustainability is important to our operations – from reducing our operational footprint to designing packaging solutions that help our customers achieve their own sustainability goals.

The 2024 report showcases the tangible progress we’ve made across our key sustainability pillars: Operating Responsibly, Decarbonisation, Circularity, Responsible Sourcing of Wood Fibre, Water. Together, these pillars guide our approach to creating long-term, positive impact across our value chain.

In 2024, Opal achieved an 8% reduction in emissions across our operations compared to 2023 – keeping us on track to meet our near-term goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 45% by 2030 (versus FY21 baseline). Our decarbonisation roadmap continues to evolve, with a strong focus on exploring the transition from natural gas to biomass and biogas for high-temperature energy needs, as well as expanding our use of renewable energy, including on-site generation.

Circularity remains central to our business model. Through our integrated value chain, we aim to recover, recycle and remake packaging, helping to enable Australia’s circular economy of paper and cardboard.

Throughout 2024, Opal processed more than 600,000 tonnes of wastepaper, producing new recycled papers for local and global markets.

We also aim to support our customers to meet their own packaging sustainability targets by designing solutions that avoid or reduce material use and incorporate recycled content while maintaining performance.

Equally important is how we operate. Opal is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and thriving workplace and strives to support the communities where we operate and to work transparently with customers and suppliers to create shared value.

“Our 2024 Sustainability Report reflects the collective effort of our people, customers and partners as we continue to reduce our impact, enable circularity and contribute to a sustainable future for packaging.” said Chris Nagaura, Opal Chief Executive Officer.

The release of the 2024 Sustainability Report reflects our continued commitment to improving transparency across our value chain and the work that is still ahead of us.
