Opal wins Gold and Silver at PIDA 2022
Opal has won two Gold and two Silver awards at The Australasian Packaging Innovation & Designs Awards (PIDA) 2022!
Gold Awards
Opal took out Gold in both the Sustainable Packaging Design of the Year Industrial subcategory and Outside of the Box Design of the Year award for our collaboration with JBS Australia to create a 100 per cent recyclable cardboard corrugated dunnage solution, to replace non-recyclable Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) dunnage.
We developed the cardboard corrugated dunnage solution to limit product movement during container transportation for JBS Foods’ meat exports. Dunnage is usually constructed from EPS, which can’t be recycled and ends up in landfill. Opal’s cardboard dunnage offers a direct replacement for non-recyclable EPS dunnage.
The dunnage solution is 100 per cent recyclable and contributes to the achievement of the 2025 National Packaging Target of the phase out of problematic and unnecessary single-use plastics packaging, by substituting single-use plastic packaging for recyclable packaging.
Silver Awards
Opal was awarded Silver in both the Food Packaging Design of the Year and Outside of the Box Design of the Year categories for a unique and beautifully designed limited edition Cadbury Roses chocolate box, featuring the artwork of First Nations Wiradjuri artist, Karen Lee, that was created in partnership with Mondelez International.
The limited edition box is 70 per cent lighter than the traditional Roses tin and demonstrates Opal’s die-cutting expertise and uses colour contrast and tactile depth with the brand’s iconic rose.
