The brief was ambitious: create eight life-like, vibrant vehicles out of recyclable cardboard, that were robust enough for the drivers to jump into, and then sprint to the finish line.
Working with marketing agency Brandstand, Opal’s Specialty Packaging team in Auckland delivered the concept, design and finished the vehicles in less than 10 days. Using Opal’s digital printer, they were able to deliver a high quality, almost photogenic print for each of the vehicles.
A lot of consideration was put into ensuing the vehicles were tough enough to withstand the race. Opal’s Specialty Packaging team worked through how the drivers would physically get in to the vehicles, hold them, and race them on the field.
Dedicated to ensuring the design could stand up to race conditions, the Specialty Packaging team even simulated races around Opal’s carpark to test their prototypes.
Global car giant GWM and the One New Zealand Warriors were delighted with the half time promotional race activation, which was created to showcase their new partnership and GWM’s range of SUVs, Utes and EVs.

Understanding the importance Sapporo placed on brand and identity, Opal’s print capabilities aligned to support Sapporo’s rich history. The design incorporated culturally significant and eye-catching Japanese iconography in the form of Manga artwork on the carton itself—the first time Manga has been used on a beer carton.
ABC’s national agricultural program, Landline featured a segment on Opal Rocklea and the artwork on fresh produce cartons.
Opal has collaborated with Mondelez to develop and produce a beautifully designed limited edition Cadbury Roses chocolate box that features the creative artwork of First Nations Wiradjuri artist, Karen Lee.
Opal’s Innovation and Design (I&D) team has collaborated with McDonald’s on a number of Happy Meal® promotional projects that showcase box office feature film releases such as Space Jam: A New Legacy.
